Some or all of these seven steps should be done when preparing the surface and preferably in this order:

1. Locate and kill any mold or mildew.
2. Remove all loose paint.
3. Dull all glossy surfaces.
4. Sand all weather wood.
5. Replace bad caulking or glazing compound.
6. Clean the surface.
7. Prime as appropriate.
